The STEM Department at my university had no interest in stopping or even mitigating positive discrimination in my PhD Lab. When the Director of Student Affairs said that the behavior that blocked my access to basic supplies was non-collegial/non-inclusive, but not hostile, I asked what type of behavior they would lead to their taking action. The Vice-Chair for Education, who was also in the meeting, said “physical violence.”
The culture at my university was at the heart of the reason that I was deathly afraid in my PhD Advisor’s lab. Fellow PhD students, no matter their behavior, are not the decision-makers.
